How
can the Newcomer Employment Centre help me?
If you
are unemployed and seeking job search support,
the Newcomer Employment Centre can refer you to
programs in the community which can help you with
career counseling, resumes, interviews, self-marketing,
learning how to job search, and job development.
We will also maintain contact through follow-up
with you and the program you have been referred
to.
How
can I make an appointment to meet with an Employment
Assessor?
You can
call 519-579-9622 ext. 244 to make an appointment.
How
long will the assessment take?
The first
meeting with the Employment Assessor may take
a minimum of one hour.
What
do I need to bring to the appointment?
You need
to bring your Social Insurance Number (SIN) card,
Permanent Resident (PR) card or landing document,
resume, education documents and the result of
a recent language assessment.
What
bus do I take to get to your office?
All number
7 buses are on the main ( King Street ) line,
7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E and 7F.
Is
babysitting provided while I am in an assessment?
Yes,
limited babysitting is available. Please call
in advance to make arrangements.
Do
you know of different programs for people who
are on EI, Social Assistance, Disabled, Youth,
etc?
Yes,
there are different programs available. The Employment
Assessor will explain them to you.
What
happens during an assessment?
We examine
your educational background and work experience
both in your country of origin and in Canada (if
applicable). Based on this information, we will
recommend appropriate job search programs to you.
Then you can decide with our help, which one you
would like to attend in order to gain meaningful
employment. We arrange the first meeting / appointment
for you and give you an official referral form
for the program/s of your choice.
Can
I go to a job search progam without an assessment?
The majority
of job search programs need an official referral
from one of our assessors.
You will
be presented with all the job search programs
in this region so that you will be able to make
a more informed decision.
Can
you give me advice about what job I can do?
If you
need information about different occupations and
if you would like to decide what kind of work
to do, we will be happy to refer you to a career
counsellor who is able to give you in-depth advice
about jobs and about the labour market.
Will
you find me a job?
Our organization
does not find jobs for clients. However, we can
refer you to excellent organizations that can
help you with your job search.
Do
you have contact with employers?
We do
not have any direct contact with employers; however,
you can have assistance in contacting employers
through some of the programs that you are referred
to.
Can
you help me to gain Canadian working experience?
Yes,
we are in contact with programs (organizations)
which will help you to gain Canadian work experience.
Can
you help me to obtain training in my professional
field?
It is possible
in some cases if clients are receiving EI or have
received EI in the last three years and are looking
for a job again.
I
don’t speak English well enough. Can I still have
an assessment?
Yes, an
interpreter will be provided. We will arrange
for the interpreter to be present and pay for
the interpreting services.
Our staff
speak diferrent languages, such as:
Bosnian,
Croatian, German, Hungarian, Mandarin, Portuguese,
Romanian, Serbian, Spanish.
I
have no work experience in my home country or
Canada
. Should I have an assessment?
Yes,
as you will get a better insight of the opportunities
available to you.
